Mozambique’s Coral gas field launches first LNG shipment
FLNG facility has gas liquefaction capacity of 3.4 million tonnes per year
Michael Marray 16 Nov 2022

The first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Area 4 Coral gas field offshore Mozambique recently departed from the Coral Sul floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility.

Area 4 is operated by Mozambique Rovuma Venture (MRV), a joint venture owned by Eni of Italy, ExxonMobil and China National Petroleum Corporation, which holds a 70% interest in the Area 4 exploration and production concession contract. In addition to MRV, the other shareholders in Area 4 are Galp of Portugal, Korea Gas Corporation (Kogas) and Mozambique company Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos (ENH), each with 10%. Eni is the delegated operator for the Coral South project and all upstream activities in Area 4.

The gas field is located in the ultra-deep waters of the Rovuma Basin. Coral Sul FLNG has a gas liquefaction capacity of 3.4 million tonnes per year, and will produce LNG from the Coral reservoir of 450 billion cubic metres of gas.

“The first shipment of LNG from Coral South project, and from Mozambique, is a new and significant step forward in Eni’s strategy to leverage gas as a source that can contribute in a significant way to Europe’s energy security, also through the increasing diversification of supplies, while also supporting a just and sustainable transition," says Eni chief executive officer Claudio Descalzi. "We will continue to work with our partners to ensure timely valorization of Mozambique’s vast gas resources.”

Descalzi says the landmark project firmly places Mozambique onto the global LNG stage. The project, approved in 2017, comes on stream after just five years, in line with the initial budget and schedule, despite the disruptions caused by the pandemic.

In November 2021 the partners held the naming and sail-away ceremony of the Coral Sul FLNG, the first floating LNG facility ever to be deployed in the deep waters of the African continent. The event took place at the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in Geoje, South Korea.

While performing the construction activities in Korea, several significant activities were undertaken in Mozambique, with full support from the Mozambican authorities, including the ultra-deep water (2,000 metres) drilling and completion campaign.
