Asian exporters optimistic despite Trump’s protectionist stance
Nearly half of small and medium-size enterprises in the Asia- Pacific region say their revenue from intra-regional exports will grow by 22% over the next 12 months, a new survey shows.

As Trump’s victory signals potential protectionism in global trade, concerns over the impact towards exporters in Asia-Pacific region have been widely raised. However, Asian SMEs are still optimistic despite the universal wariness.
Nearly half of small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) in the Asia- Pacific region say that their revenue from intra-regional exports will grow over the next 12 months by an average of 22%, according to a global research survey conducted by FedEx Express.
Asia’s trade growth by volume decelerated to 2.3% in 2015, below the 2.7% growth in global trade, and falling further below the region’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate of 5.3%. Developing Asia’s exports grew 3.0% in 2015, on par with advanced economies.
On the other hand, as the largest exporter in the region, China has seen a year-on-year growth of 0.1% in November. It was the first time since March 2016 that China Customs report a positive growth.
“We think there are two motivations. The first is that the global PPI picked up again, which result in an upward economic cycle. The second is that as Trump won the election, the developed economies also helped developing countries to recover,” says Deng Haiqing, chief economist at JZ Securities.

The booming e-commerce also adds to overall upbeat outlook. Eighty per cent of the region’s SME exporters leverage e-commerce to sell to other markets, and 44% of them foresee growth in e-commerce revenue in the next 12 months.
