Barclays strengthens regional franchise with new hires

The Asset 18 Aug 2017

Barclays has announced new hires in Hong Kong and Japan to demonstrate its commitment to strengthen its franchise in the Asia-Pacific region.

In a memo seen by The Asset and sent by Reid Marsh, co-head for Asia-Pacific and vice-chairman for investment banking, Pamela Yeung and Angela Hu have joined the bank in Hong Kong, while Takeshi Sugiyama has joined the team in Tokyo.

Yeung was named managing director and head of equity capital markets origination, reporting to Marsh. She will drive Barclays’ efforts in the equity-linked product space, with an initial focus on originating deals to expand its footprint in Greater China. She will be working with coverage bankers on opportunities ranging from equity-linked financing to offshore IPOs.

Yeung has over 15 years of capital markets origination experience and joins Barclays from China Minsheng International Holdings. Before that she was head of equity-linked solutions at Standard Chartered in Hong Kong. She also spent seven years running Greater China equity-linked origination at Citi, where she provided product solutions to state-owned enterprises and private sector companies.

Hu is a director, and has been appointed head of China financial sponsors and a China senior coverage banker to further strengthen Barclays’ Greater China coverage franchise. The role is designed to further develop the bank’s cross-border M&A and offshore financing opportunities globally, and explore the substantial associated debt financing and deal contingent risk management opportunities, generated by outbound M&A transactions.

Reporting to Vanessa Koo, head of M&A for Asia-Pacific and head of banking for Greater China, Hu moves from J.P. Morgan, where she spent nine years, and last headed up their China financial sponsors activities, as well as covering various Chinese corporate clients. Prior to J.P. Morgan, she spent time at Merrill Lynch in Hong Kong and Macquarie Bank in Australia.

Sugiyama has joined Barclays as a director, looking after the consumer/retail sector in Japan and reporting to Kunihiro Takahashi, head of corporate finance in Japan. Before joining Barclays, Sugiyama spent 18 years at Nomura in Tokyo and New York, latterly as executive director of their consumer & retail investment banking division.
