The Asset 19 Jul 2018
Franklin Templeton Investments has announced the appointment of Subash Pillai as managing director, head of Investment Solutions, Asia, effective May 23 2018.
As part of the Franklin Templeton Multi-Asset Solutions (FTMAS) group, Pillai will help lead the development of client investment solutions in Asia, including Australia. Based in Singapore, Pillai will report to Wylie Tollette, executive vice president and head of client investment solutions who is based in San Mateo, California.
Pillai will work closely with clients, sales and portfolio management teams as well as fellow client portfolio managers (CPMs) to design and manage best-in-class investment solutions engineered to achieve specific client outcomes and objectives. He will partner with distribution channels across the firm, leveraging insights from Franklin Templeton’s various investment management groups to create diversified outcome-oriented portfolios focused on risk-adjusted performance and tailored to client needs.
Pillai has 20 years’ experience as an asset allocator and fixed income portfolio manager and spent most of his career at Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM). Between 2011 and 2017, Pillai was responsible for GSAM’s Fixed Income and Multi-Asset business in Australia as well as their Global Liquidity Business across Asia Pacific.
In his role as investor, Pillai led macroeconomic analysis for Australia and New Zealand and contributed to rates and currency risk-taking activities in these countries across the GSAM Global Fixed Income platform. Additionally, as a client portfolio manager with GSAM, Pillai has worked extensively with institutional, government, corporate, bank and HNW clients across Asia Pacific representing a broad range of investment capabilities.
Pillai has an MBA from the Melbourne Business School, a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance from the Securities Institute of Australia and a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) and Arts from Monash University in Australia.
Earlier this year, Stephen Tong joined the FTMAS team as a client portfolio manager based in Hong Kong. He serves as a ‘portfolio engineer’ for clients - designing, constructing and validating client portfolios. He is also involved in managing client assets in collaboration with the Portfolio Managers of FTMAS’ strategies to ensure client requirements and needs are met.
Tong has nine years of industry experience including a seven-year stint Willis Towers Watson. In his previous role as senior investment consultant, he advised Asian institutional clients on asset allocation, investment strategy, portfolio construction and manager selection. Tong holds a Bachelor of Economics and Finance from the University of Hong Kong and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.
Commenting on the new hires, Ed Perks, CIO of Multi-Asset Solutions said: “The global Solutions market is expected to reach US$14 trillion by 2021, as increasingly sophisticated clients continue to seek out more goals-based investment strategies. I am delighted Subash and Stephen have joined us to provide their advanced expertise and insights. The expansion and buildout of Franklin Templeton’s solutions platform remains a key strategic initiative for our business and these new roles within FTMAS underscore our commitment to superior client servicing.”
