As the asset servicing industry stepped up to support their clients in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, the crisis pushed into the limelight the industry leaders whose untiring work in ordinary times probably would have been under-appreciated.

This is especially true in collateral management and corporate trust, two relatively low-key areas of asset servicing that do not draw much attention because of their technical and unexciting nature.

The Asset Servicing Leadership Awards 2021 go to:

Natalie Wallder, Asia-Pacific head of clearance & collateral management at BNY Mellon, as the “Collateral Management Banker of the Year” for The Asset Servicing Award 2021; and

Adrian Nye, managing director, regional head, issuer services, Asia, at Citi, as the “Corporate Trust Banker of the Year” for The Asset Servicing Award 2021.

Wallder led BNY Mellon’s collateral management team in scoring a breakthrough when its triparty platform began accepting Chinese bonds as collateral through Hong Kong’s Bond Connect. The groundbreaking solution allowed investors to use Chinese sovereign bonds as collateral in transactions with counterparties across the globe for the first time. The triparty solution is entirely custody-agnostic, meaning that clients can use BNY Mellon as triparty agent without custodying the assets with the bank.

Since Wallder joined BNY Mellon 14 years ago, the bank has won the Best in Collateral Management Award for seven straight years from 2014 to 2020. The winner for 2021 is yet to be announced.

Nye led Citi’s corporate trust team as the bank led all its competitors in terms of Asian bond issuance with 30% market share and Asian bond high-yield issuance with 36% market share. The bank also won key mandates away from competitors in the region and expanded its footprint in Australia and Taiwan.

Nye, who was appointed head of the bank’s agency and trust business for Asia-Pacific in January 2011, has been focusing on broadening its range of corporate trust services available to regional issuers and intermediaries active in the capital markets, mergers and acquisition, project finance and securitization sectors.

Under his leadership, Citi has won the Best in Corporate Trust award in 2021, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2014, 2013, and 2012.
