Best CEO Award: Leading the pack in trying times
Magi Chen notches up impressive financial growth while supporting sustainable initiatives at E.Sun
Asset Benchmark Research 6 Feb 2023

Operating in Taiwan’s highly competitive market, Magi Chen, president and chief executive officer of E.Sun Financial Holding, has steered her organization through a number of challenges from the Covid-19 pandemic to ongoing geopolitical tensions. Under her watch, the bank delivered a solid financial performance in 2021, including a record-high net profit of NT$20.6 billion (US$690 million) and the highest return on equity compared to local peers. Chen has also made great strides in expanding the bank’s regional footprint by opening offices in Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City and Fukuoka. As a result, the bank’s overseas business rose 15.2% from the previous year and contributed 20% to total profits.

Like many progressive CEOs in the Asia-Pacific region, Chen pursued the integration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) values into the bank’s day-to-day processes, whether it be better reporting or offering sustainable finance products to clients.

In 2021, E,Sun committed itself to a 1.5°C climate target based on the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), becoming the first financial institution to do so in Taiwan. To achieve this, Chen and her team have formulated mid-term and long-term goals such as reconfiguring all of the bank’s domestic buildings into green buildings by 2027 with an aim to use 100% renewable energy for all local and overseas business locations by 2040. E.Sun aims to be a net-zero bank by 2050.

Whether it be in achieving a strong financial performance or embedding sustainability at E.Sun, Chen highlights the importance of communication. During the review period for The Asset ESG Awards, Chen has taken part in a number of analyst meetings, press conferences and roadshows, highlighting how the bank is withstanding the challenges facing the global economy today. Going forward, Chen will continue to push the bank’s overseas aspirations and strive to be more sustainable in its offerings.

We are pleased to confer on Chen the Best CEO Award as part of The Asset ESG Awards 2022 for her significant contributions and accomplishments at E.Sun over the past year.
