Citi has appointed Fabio Fontainha Asean head of Consumer Banking, effective December 1. Fontaina will be based in Singapore and will report to Anand Selva, head of Asia Pacific Consumer Banking.
Citi’s Consumer Banking heads in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam will report to Fontaina.
“The Asean Consumer business is critical to Citi’s franchise.  We have leading market positions in Asean countries and Citi is well positioned for growth across our retail banking, wealth management and cards businesses with a strong digital focus. I look forward to Fabio’s leadership in driving further growth for Citi across Asean Consumer banking,” says Selva.
In the last year Citi has announced regional digital partnerships across Asean with the likes of Grab, Lazada and Airbnb. The bank also rolled out Voice Biometrics Authentication for clients across Asean and has launched Global Mobile, its refreshed mobile banking app in markets across the region.
In the most recent quarter Citi Asia’s Consumer Banking business reported US$1.8 billion in revenues, up 4% year on year. Citi does not break out Asean consumer banking revenues but the region's performance helped underpin the growth in Citi’s consumer business during the most recent quarter. Globally Citi operates in 19 consumer markets, with 12 markets in Asia including half from Asean.
Fontaina joined Citi in 1994 as a Management Associate in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  He has held a number of senior roles, including head of Consumer Banking in Malaysia, head of Sales & Distribution and Consumer Investments in Japan and in International Personal Banking for Latin America.
Having spent nine years working for Citi in Asia, Fontaina returned to Brazil in 2013 tasked with restructuring the retail operation. He is currently the head of Consumer and Commercial Banking for Latin America.
