A joint venture between China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) and HBK Contracting (Qatar) has won the contract to build the stadium which will host be the 2022 World Cup Final.
The contract signing was announced by the Supreme Court for Delivery and Legacy (SCDL). When the tender was launched earlier this year SCDL announced that it would look at bids of below US$800 million for the 80,000 seat stadium.
Many of the smaller World Cup stadiums are being built with modular designs, to allow excess seating to be removed after the tournament, and donated to football projects around the world. However Lusail Stadium is being developed as a symbolic project for Qatar, as is often referred to as Lusail Iconic Stadium.
It has been designed by UK architects Foster and Partners, whose previous buildings include HSBC headquarters in Hong Kong, Commerzbank Tower in Frankfurt and CITIC Bank headquarters in Hangzhou. The new city of Lusail is located 20km north of Doha.
CRRC is listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. CRRC has already completed major projects in the Middle East region, including the Mecca Metro which became fully operational in early November.
